Her latest collection, “Wade in the Water” (Graywolf, 83 pp., $24), is a salient addition to the national debate about race in America. She has just been appointed to her second term as poet laureate of the United States. Her last collection, “Life on Mars,” won the Pulitzer Prize in 2012. Born in Falmouth, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard and Columbia universities, she teaches at Princeton University. Smith is one of the essential voices in contemporary American literature. ![]()
